Bourbon and Books: Endurance and a Gold Strike

Kicking the new year off with Endurance the story of Ernest Shackleton's incredible voyage to Antarctica. And Let's be clear, Shackleton failed. His boat sank, they ate the dogs, and the entire crew lived in the most unfathomable conditions, but... they all survived the Antarctic! Shackleton even crossed the most dangerous and tumultuous bit of sea, the Drake Passage, in something a small step up from a freaking row boat to save his men.

Pairing this epic tale with the recently released Gold Strike because you're going to want a spicy meal to get you through reading about harrowing bouts of near starvation and the relentless cold.

But don't let Shackleton's failure turn you off from this New Year read it's also incredibly inspiring the lengths he went to keep his men alive and a true testament to life and the dangerous beauty of nature.

I certainly was inspired to jump into his story after my visit to Antarctica last year!
