Paris 2024 Olympics: New Dawn Distilling Draws Inspiration from Black Athletes
The Olympic Games have always showcased the pinnacle of human athleticism and perseverance. In recent years, Black American athletes have continued to make history, breaking records and barriers while inspiring millions. At New Dawn Distilling, we find deep inspiration in these extraordinary individuals. Their commitment to excellence and resilience resonates profoundly amongst our staff and partners, whose journey mirrors the determination and success of these Olympic legends.
The current Olympic Games in Paris Games continue to highlight the remarkable achievements and enduring legacy of Black American athletes. Here is who the New Dawn team is eagerly following:
Dawn O’Neal, Founder & CEO: “Simone Biles all the way. I love her most not for her exceptionalism in gymnastics, though she is the certifiable GOAT, but because of her courageous decision at the Tokyo Olympics to prioritize her mental health. So often, strong Black women just push through tough times to the detriment of their own health and well-being. It was such a boss move that she put herself first so that she could return this time around stronger than ever. When I made the decision to leave non-profit conservation to prioritize my mental health and follow my passion into the spirits industry, I took a great deal of inspiration from strong Black women like Mrs. Biles who recognize that we can only further and solidify our legacies when we take care of ourselves first. It’s been incredible to watch her rock the world of gymnastics in Paris.”
Malcolm Perry, VP Media and Social Outreach: “Sha’Carri Richardson - She’s the fastest female and one of the best things going in all of sports! She is without question, greatly, admirably, unapologetically Black. Black women are often asked to behave with a certain level of timidity. Can’t talk too loudly or be too good and Ms. Richardson eschews all of that to be authentically herself. She breaks the mold for what an Olympic athlete should look like and I find it so inspiring that she also challenges what “professional” looks like. Doubly so, working in an American whiskey company founded by a Black woman, with a majority Black team, in a field where Black individuals make up only 7.8% of the workforce, I am inspired to drive progress in the spirits industry.
Dionne O’Neal Galloway, VP Consumer Relations: “the entire Women’s basketball team because it will never stop being amazing that these incredible athletes, who typically play for different teams and against each other, come together for this event and just crush it. It is a testament to all of their dedication, skills and talent - and as a facilitator who brings people together everyday to reach their goals, I just love to see teams working so seamlessly and authentically together. Plus an extra shoutout to all the moms (five this year!) that get up every day to practice, raise a child, and fight for that Olympic dream. It’s such an inspiration and a reminder that nothing is impossible.”
