New Dawn’s 10-year old Wheated Whiskey is exactly the kind of whiskey I was looking for when I started this journey. Something completely unexpected that would push me out of my comfort zone while also staying true to the bold, classy, and elegant whiskies that I loved to sip. 

The feeling was electric - wine, spirit, and non-alcoholic beverage purveyors from AROUND THE WORLD gathered across the second floor of the DoubleTree Detroit pouring tastes and cocktails for each other, distributors, retailers, and the general public. It was supposed to be “work” but it felt like a big family reunion and I was just excited to have gotten an invite…

The Old Fashioned cocktail has a rich and debated history, with origins tracing back to the 1800s. While the Pendennis Club in Kentucky claims to have first served it, Chicago may have mentioned the drink even earlier. Today, the Old Fashioned remains a classic, with endless variations in ingredients like rye, bourbon, and bitters, allowing for endless customization and modern twists.

A comment popped up recently, “It doesn’t matter who owns the brand…” To which I REALLY wanted to reply, “Bless your heart.” 

Instead we’re going to revisit, in a significantly more blatant manner, why it matters that New Dawn is Black-woman owned. 

New Dawn’s 6-Year-Old Bourbon has been awarded a Silver Medal at the 2024 USA Spirits Ratings, just ten months after its market debut. This prestigious recognition highlights the care and craftsmanship that went into creating our first whiskey. The USA Spirits Ratings competition values spirits based on Quality, Value, and Packaging—criteria that resonate with consumer preferences. Our bourbon was praised for its deep, complex flavors of oaked cherry and spicy ginger, reflecting our commitment to excellence. This accolade marks an exciting start to Black Business Month and sets the stage for future successes.

Despite the photos it’s not just me bottling, packing, and driving the trucks across the country. I have a whole team of contractors, distributors, and retailers supporting me. And sometimes we don’t all have the same sense of urgency because life be lifein’. It’s something I’m getting used to, this “go with the flow” vibe. I’m a type A personality who really would do all the things to keep everyone happy….

We did it fam!!!!! We had a blockbuster launch selling over 100 bottles in our first week! From the bottom of my heart, thank you - thank you - THANK YOU for all the support. We are so proud of what we distilled, and we are really excited for everyone to try our 6-year-old bourbon. We know you’re going to love how it is versatile, smooth, and absolutely delicious.
